The infuriating Windows shutdown bug is finally fixed

Microsoft has finally resolved the long-standing “Update and Shut Down” bug that has frustrated Windows users for years. On Windows 11, selecting this option was supposed to turn off the PC, but instead, the system would restart returning users to the sign-in screen. The issue often caused confusion, especially on work computers where unsaved sessions or files remained open after the unexpected reboot.

Microsoft confirmed that the problem stemmed from the “Update and Shut Down” option mistakenly triggering a restart command in certain scenarios. The same issue had also been affecting Windows 10 users for quite some time. According to the company, the underlying cause was that some updates required a reboot to complete installation, overriding the shutdown process.

The fix is now being rolled out as part of November’s Patch Tuesday update, beginning November 11. With this patch, Windows will now properly power down when users select “Update and Shut Down.” Microsoft stated that users must update to Windows 11 Build 26200.7019 / 26100.7019 or later for the fix to take effect.

This long-standing issue — the reason behind users asking “Why won’t Windows shut down?” will finally be eliminated with the November update. Going forward, Windows PCs will shut down correctly after updates, putting an end to the unwanted restart problem once and for all.
