WhatsApp is working on a new feature designed to make it easier for users to free up space on their phones, especially for those who share a lot of media files. The upcoming update will bring chat-specific storage control, allowing users to identify and remove large files without deleting entire conversations.
Chat-based storage control on the way
The new “Manage Storage” option, spotted in the app’s beta version, will be added to each chat’s information page. It displays shared files in a grid layout, letting users sort photos, videos, and documents by size. This allows unwanted large files to be deleted individually or in bulk, making storage management much more practical.

Currently, storage control on WhatsApp is handled through a global menu in the app’s Settings. The new approach moves this functionality into each chat, making it particularly useful for active group conversations where unnecessary files tend to accumulate quickly.
The feature is currently available to a limited number of iOS beta testers. It’s expected to roll out to more users over time. Once it becomes widely available, users will no longer need to clear their entire chat history to reclaim storage space. Instead, they’ll be able to manage and remove unnecessary files directly within individual chats.
