Microsoft to End Support for Windows 10 Office Apps
According to a blog post by Microsoft, Office apps on Windows 10 will still be functional after the support deadline, but they will no longer receive security and feature updates. This could lead to potential performance and reliability issues over time.
Upgrading to Windows 11 may require new hardware, as Microsoft has set strict system requirements for its latest operating system. Many older devices do not meet these specifications, and Microsoft has indicated that these requirements will not be adjusted. The company has emphasized the importance of modern hardware to support enhanced security measures.
Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer, Yusef Mehdi, stated that 2025 is expected to be a significant year for PC upgrades, encouraging users to transition to Windows 11 for improved security and performance.
For users who are unable or unwilling to upgrade immediately, Microsoft is offering Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10. Consumers can opt into this program for $30 per year, while businesses have the option to extend security updates for up to three years. These updates will not provide new features but will help maintain security while users plan their transition.
Data from Statcounter as of December 2024 indicates that Windows 10 remains widely used, with nearly twice as many active installations compared to Windows 11. Given the large number of users still on Windows 10, the transition process is expected to take time.
Organizations and individuals relying on Microsoft 365 applications are advised to plan accordingly to ensure continued support and security compliance beyond the October 2025 deadline.
