Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting 240,000 SUVs, including the 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator, due to improperly secured seatbelt anchor bolts. The issue, identified during an internal investigation, raises concerns about passenger safety in the event of an accident.
According to the recall notice, some vehicles may have seatbelt anchor bolts that were not properly secured during assembly. This could prevent the seatbelt from effectively restraining passengers in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Ford’s investigation suggests that a supplier may have conducted undocumented rework of seats outside of standard operating procedures, potentially leading to the issue.

Owners of affected vehicles may hear a squeaking or rattling noise from the seatbelt anchor points, which could indicate loose or missing bolts. Ford first became aware of the problem on November 5, 2023, and launched an official investigation on December 10, 2023. After conducting site visits and reviewing supplier records, the automaker decided to issue a recall for Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators manufactured between October 2018 and June 2020.
While the defect presents a serious safety risk, Ford has stated that no crashes or injuries related to the issue have been reported so far. However, the company has received four warranty claims regarding loose or missing seatbelt bolts. Additionally, a complaint from Transport Canada, the Canadian transportation safety regulator, played a role in prompting Ford’s internal investigation.
Affected vehicle owners can expect to be notified by mail starting in March 2024. Ford dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, properly secure or replace the seatbelt anchor bolts free of charge.
Owners can check if their vehicle is part of the recall by entering their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on Ford’s official recall website or by contacting a Ford dealership.
